10 Pillars of Wellness!

Lifestyle has been found to be the most important factor in promoting good health.  However, wellness starts with prevention. Limited factors dictate our ability to take risk, one of which is youth. Often times when you see a child fall down, he quickly gets up and resumes his activities; or if he catches a cold or gets a fever, the next day he is back to business as usual.

Most parents can identify with me. As a parent myself, I remember when my children had a fever, which was rare, (I must acknowledge how blessed I am), I wished they were up and moving around. Most children when they get sick, their first instinct is to fast and rest, thus, their recovery is usually overnight. Let us remember that youth in everything, rapid cell regeneration and restoration are activated. My personal belief is that the fact that they are constantly moving around jumping and rarely sit still, their lymphatic system which does not have a pump and requires movement to do its task is activated and causes their immune system to be strong.

As adults, we can't afford to take such risk, we need to strengthen our foundation otherwise our body will ask for a break by giving us small signals in the form of colds, acid reflux, fevers, acne, constipation… And if for long periods we neglect the warning signs or simply do not listen, it will take a vacation from its owner and break down.

Applying wellness principles can be rewarding and choosing a proactive approach is wise. Strengthening our foundation with a healthy lifestyle will pay dividends. Taking small incremental steps can extend and add quality to your life.

Here are 10 pillars of wellness that worked well for me.

Water: is a solvent that plays an important role in the body. Water is essential to life; it transports nutrients and oxygen to our cells, regulates body temperature, helps prevent constipation, lubricates joints, eliminates waste and toxins from the body. The human body is made mostly of water, our cells can’t function at its optimal level without adequate amount of water; our skin, major organs, blood, lymph depend on this precious commodity. Latest studies suggest drinking ½ body weight in ounces i.e. 100 pounds 50 oz of water. It is a good idea to add fruits and vegetables to our diet they are a good source because of their water content.

Exercise: Find something that you enjoy start moving your body, build muscles, strengthen your bones, increase cardiovascular health; dance, walk, jump rope, practice yoga…

Quality nutrition: “Let food be your medicine, and let medicine be your food” Hippocrates' belief was that there is a natural cause for illness and if we address the root cause there would not be any dis-eases in the body which is simply a lack of ease. By correcting the basic causes we are also overcoming the dis-ease. Eat as close as possible to nature as possible; avoid most goods that come with an expiration date.

Rest: fatigue is the leading cause of most physical complaints. Allowing the body to rest and getting the proper amount of sleep can be so refreshing to the soul. Getting to bed before 10:00PM counts for twice the amount of time you are asleep. During sleep the body can self repair.

Self care: most people use this phrase “from now on I am going to put myself first”. That is the way it should be, do we really do that? Put your mask on first in order to help others. Take a mini vacation at a wellness spa, run a nice bubble bath, soft music, a cup of herbal tea preferably basil. Recent studies have shown that among the many benefits of basil leaves, it provides significant protection against stress. Even as a preventive measure for stress, basil leaves can be chewed two to three times a day, and has no known side effect.

Energy: motion keeps your energy flowing and releases blocked energy that may be keeping you from moving forward. Stay in motion to create positive emotion.

Reflecting: spend time listening to your thoughts without judgments. Only in the stillness can we listen to our inner wisdom. You can never go wrong.

Expectation: is an open door to countless possibilities. Watch your inner conversations; this is what determines our outer experience, thinking abundance opens the flow to creativity.

Fulfillment: make choices that leave you with a feeling of satisfaction, joy, and bliss. Spending time doing what you want will bring happiness to self and others.

Gratitude: is an emotion of gratefulness, thankfulness, appreciation and acknowledgement of what you have already manifested into existence as well as what is yet to come. Gratitude is a strong emotion. Some ways to practice gratitude slow down and appreciate the present moment, keep a daily gratitude journal, find blessings in everything, practice random acts of kindness, lastly say “THANK YOU” often.

I will leave you with these words on gratitude.

Be Thankful
Be thankful that you don't already have everything you desire,
If you did, what would there be to look forward to?

Be thankful when you don't know something
For it gives you the opportunity to learn.

Be thankful for the difficult times.
During those times you grow.

Be thankful for your limitations
Because they give you opportunities for improvement.

Be thankful for each new challenge
Because it will build your strength and character.

Be thankful for your mistakes
They will teach you valuable lessons.

Be thankful when you're tired and weary
Because it means you've made a difference.

It is easy to be thankful for the good things.
A life of rich fulfillment comes to those who are
also thankful for the setbacks.

GRATITUDE can turn a negative into a positive.
Find a way to be thankful for your troubles
and they can become your blessings.
