Tips to End Procrastination Now!

Procrastination causes our dreams to be aborted or simply die prematurely.  Don Marquis said “Procrastination is the art of keeping up with yesterday. “For so many years I was not taking my own advice and this caused me to experience mental chaos. To say I was overwhelmed would be a serious understatement.  Running three businesses all the while caring for my elderly father, I began to fall behind on so many things. To keep up with my life, I held on to the super woman attitude I had developed   and began replacing high-priority actions with tasks of low-priority; I was a mess. I lacked focus. I said to myself I must change; I must give up being a perfectionist in order to overcome this.                                                             

I decided since this did not happen overnight, and in order to make permanent changes and restore order in my life, it must be done little by little. First, we must understand the root of procrastination in order to change it. Another important factor in making permanent changes is that for it to last, it must be done over and over until it becomes second nature. Overcoming it is the most critical step to success.

It is crucial to avoid the blaming others and to start getting organized. Order and a laser focus are vital tools that will help you achieve success. Look at your life right now, where do you need order? It's confession time!

Do not be embarrassed with who you are now. Some might justify it by saying I work best under pressure, however this can be very stressful and benefits no one. This happens to the best of us at times, which is why becoming aware and recognizing that procrastination is in the way of your success and taking the time to work on this stumbling block is life changing. Remember the Past does not equal the Future, only the PRESENT = FUTURE. Taking small consistent steps to rearrange your life can be rewarding. According to Joseph Ferrari, a psychologist at DePaul University in Chicago; some people procrastinate because they believe they need a rush, some feel paralyzed by perfectionism, and others simply don't want to do the task.

Ask yourself these questions:

·         Why do I procrastinate?

·         What is my existing belief system?

·         Is will-power enough to break bad habits?

·         What is holding me back?

·         Do I take inventory of my life?

What will you need to do in order to move forward?

  • Commit to achieving your goals
  • Discipline is your “means to an end”
  • Dedicate yourself to obtaining the life you want
  • Motivation “staying in motion helps you control your emotions”
  • Expect a  miracle
  • Have an open mind
  • Be gentle with yourself
  • Be honest with yourself
  • Pace yourself. Start with 10 minutes a day


Here is a formula that I used to help me overcome

·         Make a list of things that you would like to get done that day and be specific

·         Set small goals

·         Number them according to priority

·         Avoid over-commitment

·         Get a support system

·         Track your progress

·         Do more difficult task first

·         Delegate task to someone else or simply hire help

·         Use a day planner

·         Stop thinking about it and just do it

·         Act now! no excuse

·         Keep away from distraction like social network

·         Set a time to complete the project

·         Use a mantra like “I can do this”

·         Do not take on any more then you can chew

·         Remain focused and determined

·         Get as much information as possible about how to complete your project

·         Change the way you see your world

·         Take charge of your life. Get a few stress management sessions 

·         Look for a mentor or someone who has achieved this outcome

·         Tell others about your plans to get the support you need
